Dear Mariola,

I was sorry to hear that you have been ill and hope that you are well now.
I returned to school this morning after our Easter holiday and was delighted to receive the parcel of cards and information from all of your pupils. It was a lovely surprise and I would like to thank you, your staff and your pupils for the wonderful gift.
Our pupils are back in school tomorrow and I will enjoy reading all the children’s cards and of course eating the chocolate. We will write thank you cards for you all and send you some more information about the school.
Your English day sounds very exciting. One traditional food that is served particularly in Yorkshire is the Yorkshire pudding. It is a batter that is made from milk, flour and eggs and is served with roast meat such as beef or chicken and gravy. The batter can also be used with sausages to form a dish called 'Toad in the Hole’:

Yorkshire Pudding

Ingredients  to make: 12 Yorkshire puds
225g plain flour
1 teaspoon salt
4 eggs, beaten (see tip)
300ml milk

Method

Prep:5min  ›  Cook:20min  ›  Extra time:10min resting  ›  Ready in:35min 

1.Sift flour and salt in to a large bowl and add the beaten eggs and half the milk, whisk until it resembles wallpaper paste (needs to be very smooth), then add the rest of the milk and again whisk till smooth. Let it rest for 30 minutes, this can be speeded up by placing it in the fridge for 10 minutes.
2.Put a muffin tray with 1/2 teaspoon of beef dripping in each hole in the oven at the highest possible temperature (normally 270 C) until you hear the oven click and reach temperature.
3.Remove the muffin tray and pour in your batter (about 1/2 to 3/4 way up each hole), then place back in oven and reduce temperature immediately to 230 C / Gas 7. Bake for 20 minutes.
4. Remove from oven and serve with onion gravy

Recipe for Gravy:

Ingredients:
•2 medium onions, peeled and thinly sliced
•2 tbsp vegetable oil
•2 tbsp butter
•1 tsp sugar
•1 tsp balsamic vinegar
•750ml/ 3 cups beef stock
•4 tsp corn flour/corn starch
•4 tsp cold water
•Salt and black pepper

Preparation:

• Melt the oil and butter in a large saucepan over a gentle heat. Add the onion and cover with a lid. Cook slowly for approx 10 mins or until the onions are soft and translucent, take care not to burn, the onions should not be browned.
• Add the sugar and balsamic vinegar to the onions and stir well. Cover with the lid and continue to cook for a further 5 minutes, again making sure they don’t catch.
• Add the stock and boil gently uncovered for 5 minutes.
• In a heatproof jug or bowl mix the corn starch/flour with the cold water to create a thin paste. Pour a little of the hot gravy into the starch mixture and mix thoroughly. Pour the starch mixture back into the gravy, raise the heat to high and boil for 10 minutes or until the gravy is slightly thickened.
•Season with salt and pepper and keep warm until ready to serve.

Toad in the Hole
Ingredients
Serves: 4
8 pork sausages
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
225g (8 oz) plain flour
4 eggs
250ml (8 fl oz) milk
salt and pepper to taste

Method

Prep:10min  ›  Cook:30min  ›  Ready in:40min 
1.Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C /gas mark 6.
2.Pour the oil into the bottom of a baking dish, and arrange the sausages over it in a single layer. Bake for 10 minutes in the preheated oven.
3.Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, eggs and half of the milk until smooth. Gradually mix in the rest of the milk until a smooth batter is achieved. Season with salt and pepper.
4.Remove the sausages from the oven, and ladle the batter over them until the sausages are 3/4 covered. Return to the oven, and bake for 35 minutes, or until the centre is risen and browned. Don’t worry if the underside seems slightly soft, as this is normal.
5.  Serve with onion gravy.

I will also have a think about some typical cakes and biscuits that the children could make and let you know soon. When are you planning to hold your English day?

Rozpoczęliśmy korespondencję z przyjaciółmi z Kell Bank School 🙂

UWAGA!!! UWAGA!!! Nawiązaliśmy przyjaźń z uczniami z Anglii!!!

W waszym imieniu moi drodzy uczniowie zaproponowałam Pani Dyrektor Szkoły z Kell Bank CE Primary School, Healey, North Yorkshire, w Anglii – Pani Kathleen Allison wspólną pracę i zabawę. Zgodziła się!!! Od dziś będziemy starać się pokazać naszym koleżankom i kolegom z Anglii jak wygląda nasza szkoła, klasa, nauka. Przedstawimy się i będziemy wymieniać się pomysłami dotyczącymi nauki i zabawy.

Szkoła znajduje się w północnej Anglii. Jest szkołą, w której uczy się 45 uczniów. Są tam dwie klasy, jedna z nich do grupa dzieci w wieku od 4 do 7 lat i druga z uczniami od 8 do 11 lat.

Zatem o co nas pytają znajomi z Kell Bank CE Primary School? Jakie Oni mają odpowiedzi? Co my im odpowiemy?

1. Pytanie z Kell Bank School: What time do the pupils start and finish school? O której godzinie uczniowie zaczynają i kończą zajęcia szkolne?

Odpowiedz uczniów z Anglii: At Kell Bank we start at 9am and finish at 3.30pm 

Nasza odpowiedz: Our children don’t start classes always at the same time, it depends on their timetable, some children start at 8 o’clock, some later. They don’t finish their lessons at the same time either. Some classes finish at 12.30, but others stay at school till 2.30p.m. 

2. How far do pupils have to travel to school and how do they get there e.g. walk or car? Jak daleko mają uczniowie do szkoły i jak się do niej dostają np. piechotą czy autem?

Most of our pupils live within a mile or two of the school but some come from three or four miles away. Some pupils cycle to school but most travel by car. Very few walk. 

The  majority of our pupils go to school on foot, because our school is in the middle of quite big housing estate. It’s very comfortable for parents because they don’t have to drive their children. But we have a few students living in the villiges around the town so they must travel by car.

3. What sorts of lessons do you have? Jakie lekcje macie?

The main lessons for us are Literacy and Mathematics  which the pupils have every morning. The other subjects are once a week : Science, History, Geography, Music, Sport, Religion, Art, technology and Computers . The school also goes swimming to the local pool once a week and every fortnight the junior class spends a morning in a local wood where they cook on a fire and use the woods for learning activities (Forest School)

Every day they have Maths, Polish lg. Music, elements of Science, English lg, PE, RE, Art, technology and Computers they have once or twice a week.

4. Do you have school dinners?   What sort of foods do you have for dinner?  What are the pupils favourite meals? czy macie obiady wszkole? jakie dania macie na obiad? Jakie jakie są ulubione potrawy uczniów?

We have a kitchen and a cook who produces a main meal and a pudding for the pupils and staff every day. The parents pay for the school dinners each week. The meals usually consist of a meat (such as chicken, pork, fish or beef) some potatoes, rice or pasta and some vegetables. The children also always get a piece of bread with their meal. The puddings are very varied from rice and fruit to cake and custard. The dinners are very popular with 38 of our 45 pupils having a cooked meal every day. One of the most popular meals at school is Chicken Korma and rice.

Of course, school offers dinners. Parents decide if they want their child to eat school dinners or not. they pay for it every month. The menu is designed every week. It’s always food which is liked by pupils like pancakes, fish almost every Friday, potatoes with a piece of meat, some vegetables, rice or pasta, soups like tomato soup, vegatable soup, chicken soup.

5. Do you have a school garden? What foods do you grow locally? Czy macie szkolny ogródek? Jakie pożywienie (ważywa, owoce) rosną w waszej kolicy, w waszym ogródku?

We are lucky to have several vegetable plots and some apple trees within the school grounds. This year the apples have grown very well and we have lots to use in school to cook with and to eat. Other vegetables that we grow are tomatoes, courgettes, peas, carrots, potatoes, pumpkins, lettuce and beans. We also grow strawberries, raspberries and blackcurrants. The children have been busy harvesting the vegetables over the summer and this week we  have a Harvest Festival in the church to give thanks for the harvest.

Unfortunately, we don’t have our own garden. All ingredients are provided by some local farmers or bought in local shops.

6. What sports do the children like to play? Jaki rodzaj sportu uczniowie lubią uprawiać?

One of the most favourite sports is football, but the children also like playing cricket, rugby and netball. At the moment we are practising netball ready for the tournament between all the local primary schools.

The most favorit game for boys is football, of course. Girls play with their friends making up some games but also hide and seek, they jump over the elastic band
